Score:8.5/10Time: 8-15 hours (main request only),20-40 hours (a language learned)Summary:An excellent game but requires a little patience, which will give you a new experience of flying around a beautiful world, study a lost language, explore the history of a universe as a pirate-like archaeologist and decide what is your story.Cons:1. Too slow! when you want to translate something and gather more information from the trader, the scholar and other people. Gathering these inscriptions and trying to translate more are torturing me.2. There are some events requesting some relics, but if you hesitate you lose the chance when you have multiple choices of dealing with these relics.3. There is no dictionary or inventory inside the UI/game showing the words and relics you collected, and the timeline is sometimes inconvenient notwithstanding the timeline is good for sorting out the history of the Nebula. 4. No turning back to a moon that you haven't explored thoroughly.5. Few side quest.6. No free exploration chance after the game ends.7. Start+ mode is not as is expected, what we need is to move faster, skip talking and rewind time, which will help learn new things about the language and the history or get a new ending. This made this game quite a one-time game.8. No tutorial for conversations.Pros:1. Good story.2. Excellent art and music.3. Open story throughout the game.4. Easy for players to get hold of the past of entire universe of Nebula.5. There are humor hidden throughout the game.6. A new language learned. p.s. The fight with Aamir really LMAO.(From a Sorcery! series player.). I love this game to bits. Its an intriguing story revealed over the course of your investigation. The best bit though is the linguistic parts of the game. YOu get to decipher an entire alien language, based initially on vague hints from the game and your own intuition you can slowly build up an understanding of how the language works. As your understanding grows so too do the complexities of the words you are trying to understand. From the two or three symbols words at the start to 15 character words and perhaps more. I'm already excited to restart with a New GAme + where I get to keep my dictionary of learned words and the game starts with more complicated phrases from the very start. If you want a great blend of puzzle and narrative this is a great game to pick up.. A fantastic and unique game if you are fan of adventure games. A gold standard in storytelling and worldbuilding and worth the price on the tin. Demands multiple replays to try different combinations and grow your vocabulary. Great middle section and engaging storytelling hamstrung ultimately by a binary ending that made me think of Mass Effect 3 in terms of how frustrating.PROS-Some of the best world-building I've ever seen in a game. The way the lore is discovered, and how your own actions affect the characters' UNDERSTANDING of said lore is absolutely unique. Absolutely the best feature of the game and will make it recommended study in writing classes years from now.-The translation mechanic is really interesting, and really pushes you to explore the world more and more. The logic of the language is sound (save for maybe an edge case of a word here and there that seems to be counterintuitive).-Rewards exploration, combing over ruins rewards you with new words to really increase your understanding of the game.-The replayability is insane. The new game+ concept of carrying over your dictionary from playthrough to playthrough makes each subsequent replay more revealing. I'm wrapping up my third and will likely start my fourth now. -Writing and characterization is really well done, you're not creating a character a la an RPG (Aliya and her compatriots all have relatively set personalities) but your actions within those realms are very consistent and allow you to immerse yourself within them.-Active dev team working to respond to community feedback and bug reports, especially narrative breaks and things like that.CONS-The artstyle of the game is... sometimes really unfortunate. While the 3D environemtns have a fun simplistic cartoony look, the sprites can become really tiresome. Setting aside the jarring animation (especially for any character who isn't Aliya or her robot) the artstyle chosen can only be described as tumblr-esque. Ugly characters across the board (save for our protagonist), weird proportions, completely inexplicable rosacia. It definitely took some getting used to.-VERY punishing progression system. You can't revisit older ruins you've already explored (with no justifications save for ONE moon of the near dozen you can visit). Accidentally hitting the wrong button, missing an artifact, etc. can ruin an entire playthrough (especially if you had a specific goal). Which, if you're on a replay trying to do something specific, can make you play through hours before you can redo (as restarting the game wipes your dictionary).-The ending is static, and literally nothing you do affects the actual ending (aside from your characters' understanding of what's going on). It's especially disappointing as literally every other aspect of the game is affected by your choices. The order you do things shapes your entire perspective throughout any given playthrough. But when you reach the last act of the game, (which can come at pretty much any point after the opening chapters), the game is gonna be pretty much no different playthorugh to playthrough, and the ending itself is entirely underwhelming, making it really unclear what the developers intentions were with the ending or the story as a whole.Overall though, the game is a fantastic experience, its replayability makes the disappointing ending more like a bump in an otherwise incredible story. inkle studios has achieved something unique and incredible, and hopefully the work they've done inspire many others and lead to huge developments in storytelling and worldbuilding. Absolutely pick it up!. An unusual beast – really clever, engaging, and interesting, with some really strange rough edges. It's an astonishing achievement in narrative construction, and in some ways that works to its detriment – the ways in which the environment, and your character's understanding of the environment, are affected by your actions is seamless enough that it can be hard to see what changed (until subsequent playthroughs). Pros:– The setting really is deeply engrossing, and the world-building is top-notch – quietly and un-self-congratulatorily makes 'diverse' choices, and starts to feel very real. – The translation mechanic is really well-done and genuinely very fun. – Much more replayable than it seems on a first playthrough – a lot of depth really unlocks, and none of the depth and variance in the narrative is at all disappointing.– Some reviews have complained about the fixed (or semi-fixed) personality of the main character, but she's interesting and it feels very consistent and coherent.– Nice devs! Very responsive to community feedback, a lot of broken things have been fixed. Cons:– I think a little bit of 'irrelevant' detail and discovery was lost for the sake of the narrative complexity. It's easy to feel that each individual location was too shallow – the overall universe of the game is so carefully-crafted, and I don't think this 'needed' to be an open-world game, but the world can feel very gated off, and individual portions of the experience very tightly-structured. – The ending is oddly underwhelming. This feels deliberate on the part of the devs, and I get the narrative point being made, but the lack of a real moment of understanding is unsatisfying.– Save system is annoying – it's too easy to misclick and ruin a playthrough. I'd overall unreservedly recommend the game, though – the truly novel and innovative aspects feel very much worth tolerating the less brilliant side.. As someone who occupies most of their time with studying ancient history, loves Ancient Egypt, and is also a language enthusiast who studied linguistics as well, this game was simply perfect for me. If you are even remotely interested in linguistics, history and archaeology, as well as liking adventure/exploration games with a heavy focus on the narrative and making choices, then this will be a great experience for you. I am calling it an experience more than a game, because for me it had less to do with playing any game mechanics and more with getting immersed in the world, the characters and its lore.Basically Heaven's Vault invites you to grab a cup of coffee, put on your archaeology hat and then become part of a beautifully crafted setting that heavily draws from the Ancient cultures of our Earth, mostly the natives/indigenous and of course Egyptian/African ancient history and culture.Highly recommended for those people like me who are a bit tired of all the violent, drama heavy/focused entertainment out there and want to engage with more profound and beautiful ideas. Thank you, dev team, for creating this work of art. Please more of this :). Wow, just wow. This is the best game I have ever played. Having gone to school for archaeology and anthropology this fulfilled that need to explore, to learn, and to connect the dots. The story is rich and diverse and I played the game start to finish in a total of 46 hours in less than a week. I couldn't stop playing. A masterpiece.. Heaven's Vault is an interesting and fairly unique game. It's all about exploring ancient ruins as an archeologist, looking for ancient artefacts and writing, and piecing together a dead language through the game as you try to make sense of the ancient history that permeates the science fantasy setting. The visuals are great, but the game is a bit of a slow burner. Often you will wish for a sprint button or a way to speed up the dialogue of "I think I got this word right / wrong", etc. It's also a pity you are somewhat on rails - you get to explore most locations only once, and if you don't find all the bits on that one go, you're out of luck until New Game Plus.If you have some 15 odd hours to spare though, it's an enjoyable experience you don't get much of from other games. New Patch: 2018.11.5.1: We've uploaded a new patch, here's what's changed:2018.11.5.1 Melee impact noise causes guards to look, but doesn't automatically make them sound the alarm. (They'll still sound the alarm when they see you.) Reduced radius of Concussion Hammer's melee impact noise. Fixed pods sometimes leaving behind contents when undocking from ships. If you have problems with any patch, please fill our our Bug Report Form[docs.google.com] to let us know what went wrong!. The Fair Points Update: I was too nervous to read Heat Signature reviews for two weeks after launch. I was relieved to see the scores were great, and after 3.5 years of work, that was all I wanted to hear: I didn't want to know what their caveats were.Once I calmed down and read them, though, I was delighted: they were not only very positive, but they told entertaining stories and made intelligent points. And almost every critique I read I thought was a fair point. Hence this:The Fair Points Update. 5 new features and 3 new items, in direct response to review critique, designed to round the game out and make it more fun for more people. We also added a gun that fires acid money to melt the flesh from your enemies and leave only chemically bleached bone. No-one asked us for that, we just kind of did it, and now here we are. This post only explains the features themselves, read the blog version[www.pentadact.com] if you're interested in the design thinking behind it all.Fair Point:. Two weeks to find two weapons left by two legends in love: http://store.steampowered.com/app/268130/Heat_Signature/It's on this day, the 13th of Space February for some reason, we remember the assassin Cherry Ash and her lover, muse, and arresting officer Tesh Domina. Two legends of their professions, two glittering careers brought crashing down in glorious flames when they hooked up instead of doing their jobs. Today we celebrate their professionally disastrous and ultimately fatal love, partly because it has something to teach us about the human condition, and partly because their sweet custom weapons are still knocking around here somewhere. For the next two weeks, two unique shipments are passing through the Drift. Look for a ship with a flashing gold beacon, and raid it to find either Cherry's Fatal Attraction or Tesh's Instant Connection. Each shipment will keep flying around until you steal it, or until the end of February. After that, whether you stole them or not, both items will be available to find as very rare random loot.Cherry's Fatal Attraction. New Patch: Version 2017.09.25.1: We've uploaded a new patch, here's what's changed:If you manage to wedge your pod in a small gap of a larger ship, we now let you fly out after a few bounces.Clicking while dialogue is still writing now completes the dialogue instead of progressing.Less sharp dialogue-writing noise.Fixes for several rare crashes when:Armed glitchtrap is ejected into space.Ship module destroyed near guards.Firing ship's missiles.Thanks!. A new patch is live! Version 2017.09.22.1: Our second patch is now up, here's what we changed:Fixed end game conversation with Fiasco sometimes not triggering after liberating all four Strongholds. We heard that screenshake can cause nausea for some, so we've added an option to disable it. The U key is no longer hard-coded to toggle UI. You can now bind other controls to U and toggle UI to other buttons.Fixed 'U' key display in Controls menu. Added fast-forward hint when player is carried. You'll no longer get Hijack missions with a No Living Witnesses clause, because, well, you're delivering the whole ship and everyone on it, so who really cares if any of them saw you?Fixed a rare crash when player is floating in space. A couple of people were getting graphical corruption or the game not starting, if that's you we have a second possible solution to this in the tech post now, full instructions there: http://steamcommunity.com/app/268130/discussions/0/1496741765123664804/Thanks!. Fixed crashbeams/subverters sometimes causing guards to panic.2017.10.13.1 Better error checking for creating/destroying sprites.2017.10.12.1 Pilots and autopilot try to avoid flying near enemy stations. Save Capture Cursor and Pause in Background settings. Fixed Mysterious Glitch Trap animation bug. Fixed bug re-creating surfaces larger than needed. Disabled Create Textures On Demand. (This is a possible fix for players that are experiencing crashes since patch 2017.10.10.1)If you'd like to get patches as soon as possible, the nextversion beta receives patches as soon as they're ready for testing. If you have problems with any patch or beta, please fill our our Bug Report Form[docs.google.com] to let us know what went wrong!. The first reviews are in!: It's release day and the first reviews are in! Eurogamer has a thoughtful review, which talks about how intricate the story is - "As a player I felt both autonomous and well-cared for. I could play the game as I saw fit in any moment, but whatever I did, the overall story refused to become an ugly, artless blob formed by my actions":https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-04-16-heavens-vault-review-a-rich-web-of-possibilityOver on PC Gamer, they describe the game as "Exquisite" saying "Heaven's Vault does a beautiful job of letting you unlock a language, and thus a dialogue of sorts, with the past, via a wonderfully engaging protagonist."https://www.pcgamer.com/heavens-vault-review/TechRaptor says: "This is an absolutely beautiful game that manages to succeed at something genuinely unique and interesting. It also does something many of the best adventure games do. It makes me want to spend more time in its world, as Heaven’s Vault is well worth my time.
